Complimentary: Math Exam Papers with fully worked solutions *** Options include: 3 sets of - Secondary 1/2/3/4/5 Express/NA/NT - IP Year 1/2/3/4 - JC 1/2 This book is one of the three in the series. It introduces the advanced modeling techniques for primary school mathematics. The Singapore mathematics curriculum recommends teaching 12 heuristics under four categories; the 2006 version is given below: 1. Give a representation. a. Draw a diagram b. Make a list c. Use equations 2. Make a calculated guess. a. Guess and check b. Look for patterns c. Make suppositions 3. Go through the process. a. Act it out b. Work backwards c. Before-after 4. Change the problem. a. Restate the problem b. Simplify the problem c. Solve part of the problem The modeling techniques used in this book are developed and refined by the Author over the course of his teaching career in the last 25 years. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) models are used extensively to demonstrate the absolute advantage over the traditional one-dimensional bar models taught in schools. A picture is worth a thousand words indeed. Wherever applicable, the Author believes in drawing a model so effective that it practically takes over the solving process. The ideal scenario is when the model itself is the solution or at the very least, simplifies much of the cumbersome steps by revealing at a glance how the answer can be arrived. A truly effective model is one which includes all necessary information in the question and let the student identify immediately what is known. The remaining work boils down to finding the value of a single unit from which any desired part of the model can be computed. As the reader will soon notice, various types of unusual models including dots, grid lines, letters, 2D and even 3D models are used in this book. Of particular mention are the 2D models, whereby the additional dimension offers the flexibility of either the length or the area to be assigned as the key to the solution of the problem. 33 types of problems are classified under 18 chapters and solved using models. With 198 specially selected worked problems, the Author aims to introduce and demonstrate the power of the various types of models which are elegant and effective though they can be abstract at times. By grouping the questions based on various concepts, the essence of each type of model is illustrated in depth. To gain the most out of this book, the reader is strongly encouraged to spend some time studying how each model is constructed. Features of this book ★ 198 questions are categorised into 33 must-know concepts and corresponding solving techniques which you wish you had been taught in schools. ★ Actual questions posted by school students and full-colour online solutions (by hand) via mobile technology.
