Whether you spend all day in the office or just binge watch shows on Netflix, we’ve all experienced tired eyes. Having tired eyes is uncomfortable and they might even cause headaches and pain in your neck, shoulders and back. If you often experience such problems, here are some ways you can prevent and relieve tired eyes:
If you haven’t had an eye exam in over a year, now’s the time to grab your phone and book an appointment with your optometrist. Getting your eyes checked regularly and finding the right eyewear for you makes sure that those eyes aren’t strained unnecessarily. Opt for glasses with a blue light filter to protect yourself from those harmful rays that exacerbate tired eyes. If you find glasses annoying, try the ACUVUE OASYS contact lenses which have tear-like properties that help to minimise feelings of eye tiredness.
If staring at your computer screen is inevitable, make sure the screen you’re staring at for hours isn’t killing those eyes. Get a screen with the highest resolution possible and one that is at least 19 inches, so you don’t end up squinting the whole day. We recommend the ASUS Gaming Monitor for its 21.5 inch display with flicker-free and low blue light technologies.
We usually forget that we can make use of our computer display settings to soothe those tired eyes. If you’re in a dark room, adjust your screen to become dimmer with a warmer colour temperature, and if you’re in a well-lit room, increase the brightness and change to a cooler colour temperature. Don’t be afraid to play around with your screen’s settings until you find the perfect calibration for your eyes.
If you love taking selfies, you know how important proper lighting is. But selfies aside, proper lighting is also important as excessive light can strain your eyes. If your work environment has harsh outdoor lighting, try to eliminate this by closing the blinds and ensuring that the windows are to the side, rather than in front or behind of your screen. For your indoor lighting, avoid fluorescent ones and opt for LED and halogen bulbs. We recommend you try the Yeelight Smart LED Bulb which allows you to control the brightness and colour of your lights using your phone or even your voice.
For all you contact lens wearers, try the ACUVUE Contact Lens with Transitions which automatically adapts to different light conditions, so you no longer have to strain your eyes whether you’re indoors or outdoors.
Now that you’ve got all the right equipment, make sure you don’t forget your workspace. Position your computer screen so that it is about an arm’s length away from the centre of the screen, and just slightly below your eyes. If you need to switch between looking at the screen and a document, we recommend you use a document holder that can be placed in between your keyboard and monitor so your eyes don’t have to feel tired from all that readjusting.
You should have heard of a neck pillow, but have you ever heard of an eye pillow? Eye pillows are made from soft fabric that is filled with flax or other dried grains. It helps your eyes and the surrounding muscles to sink deep into your eye sockets, providing a new kind of eye relaxation. If you’d like to try it for yourself, you can get your own one here.
Did you know that we normally blink 15-20 times per minute? But when we use our computers or handphones, we tend to blink only 3-4 times per minute and this dries out our eyes, making them feel more tired. As a rule of thumb, you should have a blink break every 20 minutes. During this break, blink your eyes very slowly a couple of times. This trick works wonders as it will make your eyes feel fresh and rejuvenated immediately.
This popular rule will relieve tired eyes, especially if you tend to focus only on your screen the whole day. The 20-20-20 rule recommends that you look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes. Not only does this help with tired eyes, giving yourself regular breaks will also keep you more alert and more productive. So instead of burying yourself into your office chair, why not take a quick break once in a while?
If you have a little more time to spare, why not give yourself an eye massage during your break? There are many eye massages out there but here’s an easy one we recommend: Use the tips of your thumbs to move in circular motions around the eye area – from the top of your nose to the edge of your eyelid. If you’re too lazy to do your own massage, you can get the OSIM Eye Massager which will improve circulation in your eyes and relieve any eye fatigue or strain.
