Right on the dot, a head pops through the sliding door, scanning for a potential interviewer – or perhaps just someone else? She glides into the Cafe, notices a messy makeshift workplace at the corner, and approaches me. Like her bubbly persona on the Shopee Blog, Iris appears, slightly flustered but full of energy.<\/span>\nIris Tan<\/span><\/a> is a writer from the Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) wing of Shopee\u2019s Brand & Growth Marketing team. Effervescent yet professional, she switches between work and play related questions without missing a beat, all while peppering the conversation with humour and laughter. Though Iris thinks she\u2019s a better writer than speaker, the interview I had with her proves she\u2019s equally good at both. <\/span>\nRead on to find out more about SEO writing and be enthralled by some of Iris\u2019 personal interests!<\/span>\n[caption id=\"attachment_22019\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"1024\"]\"\" Iris writing articles on her laptop just outside her office space[\/caption]\nPerry: <\/b>Hi Iris! It\u2019s a surreal experience, finally meeting someone from the other half of the <\/span>Shopee Blog<\/span><\/a>!<\/span>\nIris: <\/b>Hi Perry, thank you for having me. The pleasure is mine as well!<\/span>\nP: <\/b>Let\u2019s get right to it then – tell us about what you do at Shopee.<\/span>\nI: <\/b>Well, long story short, I write – all day and night! (laughs) I\u2019m part of the creative team that forms one half of the SEO department. Our job revolves around content creation – from writing about food, beauty, to lifestyle – the list is endless!<\/span>\n[caption id=\"attachment_22029\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"1024\"]\"\" Iris gathers her SEO team for a photo, with a group-created backdrop of Ironman and Deadpool post-its[\/caption]\nP: <\/b>How does a normal day at Shopee Singapore pan out for you?<\/span>\nI: <\/b>I work closely with my fellow team members from the technical side of the SEO department, and usually start the day by tracking our external linking performance. Thereafter, I utilise analytic softwares such as Google AdWords to predict the best topics to write about. This software is used to analyse the best keywords for our articles so as to boost our search engine performance and visibility. As trends in the e-commerce business shift in real-time, it\u2019s even more important that we keep an ear to the ground and stay updated. <\/span>\nFor the rest of the day, it\u2019s mostly writing – either for Shopee, or for other media outlets we\u2019re currently collaborating with!<\/span>\n[caption id=\"attachment_22023\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"1024\"]\"\" Iris has written up a storm on both the Shopee Blog and various media mainstays[\/caption]\nP: <\/b>Collaborations? How does that work?<\/span>\nI: <\/b>It\u2019s all part of a process called content syndication! Essentially, we work with prominent media publishers like Daily Vanity and GoodyFeed to create relevant articles. For a site like Daily Vanity for instance, we\u2019ll write pieces related to <\/span>skincare and beauty<\/span><\/a>. These articles will then be posted on the publishers\u2019 sites, with important backlinks to Shopee. This means free content for them, and more exposure for us! (laughs)<\/span>\n[caption id=\"attachment_22030\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"818\"]\"\" Iris celebrates her graduation with her boyfriend, who has a Masters of Science in Quantitative Finance[\/caption]\nP: <\/b>Having your work featured all over Singapore\u2019s best infotainment sites is quite the achievement! Did you always expect to break into a career in writing?<\/span>\nI: <\/b>Yes, I\u2019m grateful for the opportunities I get at Shopee! I discovered my passion for writing really early on in life, thanks to my favourite English teacher in Secondary school. Back then, I knew very little about SEO content writing, and therefore shelved my passion as a hobby. An internship I undertook with a digital marketing firm back in University changed that perception, and writing soon became a viable career option.<\/span>\nSimilar to many fresh graduates, my job-hunting journey had its ups and downs. Fortunately, I stumbled upon Shopee\u2019s opening for an SEO content writer, which was a great match with my career aspirations. Ever since I started my career at Shopee Singapore, I\u2019ve never looked back!<\/span>\n[caption id=\"attachment_22021\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"1024\"]\"\" Iris leans more towards pink and neutral tones when it comes to makeup[\/caption]\nP: <\/b>Good to know that you\u2019ve found a fulfilling career at Shopee Singapore! You mentioned writing as a hobby – are there any projects you\u2019ve done on the side that you\u2019d like to show the world?<\/span>\nI: <\/b>I do, actually! I\u2019m rather active on <\/span>Dayre<\/span><\/a>, and have continued using it even after most people moved to WordPress and other blogging platforms. Most of my posts revolve around makeup – I used to do makeup reviews three times a week – and have made many like-minded friends on the platform. I\u2019m no longer as active as I was back then though – writing for fun\u2019s a lot harder when you\u2019re writing on the job all the time! (laughs)<\/span>\n[caption id=\"attachment_22018\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"960\"]\"\" Iris\u2019 simple go-to makeup on the weekends[\/caption]\nP: <\/b>Oh my, we\u2019ve a beauty blogger with us today! It does sound like you got into it earlier than most though – how did your interest in makeup begin?<\/span>\nI: <\/b>I have my mum to thank for that! (laughs) I first got into <\/span>makeup<\/span><\/a> in Secondary 1, an age where kids would usually sneak cosmetics from their mother\u2019s stash – with terrible consequences if they got caught. My mother, however, was the complete opposite, and actually encouraged me to express myself through makeup.<\/span>\nMy obsession with makeup only intensified during my Polytechnic days, when I had more spending power thanks to part-time jobs! I\u2019ve been blessed with healthy skin, which meant that I could test out just about every new product that hit the shelves. Today, I\u2019ve accumulated about 150 lipsticks at home, plenty of other cosmetics, and vast amounts of beauty and <\/span>skincare<\/span><\/a> experience! (laughs)<\/span>\n[caption id=\"attachment_22022\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"1024\"]\"\" Iris shows off her latest makeup addition: the limited edition Colourpop<\/a> Disney Designer Collection[\/caption]\nP: <\/b>150 lipsticks is an incredible amount! As you\u2019ve accumulated such a large collection, are there certain types of <\/span>lipstick<\/span><\/a> you\u2019ve grown to love, or learned to avoid?<\/span>\nI: <\/b>I\u2019ll start with the no-nos – blue, green and most metallic lipsticks are out of the question for me. I\u2019ve had one or two unfortunate encounters with those, and intend to never try them again! (laughs)<\/span>\nNow for the good things! In my opinion, a good lipstick should feel just like a lip balm, and shouldn\u2019t stain everything it comes into contact with. My current personal favourite is <\/span>Dior\u2019s Lip Tattoo<\/span><\/a> – oh dear, it\u2019s like I\u2019m writing an article for Shopee Singapore! It\u2019s an occupational hazard, describing products like I\u2019m trying to sell them!<\/span>\n[caption id=\"attachment_22024\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"1024\"]\"\" Iris spends an easy afternoon with her clique at P.S. Cafe on Ann Siang Hill[\/caption]\nP: <\/b>Maybe you\u2019re just really talented at this! (laughs) Are your other interests aligned with what you\u2019re usually writing about as well?<\/span>\nI: <\/b>Yes, they actually are\u2026 (blushes) I\u2019m really fond of cafe-hopping, and I\u2019m absolutely in love with places that serve all-day breakfast! I\u2019m someone who has to eat while writing, so spending the entire day at a cafe eventually became a weekly affair. <\/span>\n[caption id=\"attachment_22027\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"1024\"]\"\" A flatlay of Iris\u2019 favourite Garden Slug dishes – the All Day Big Breakfast, & the Spicy Aglio Olio Con Funghi[\/caption]\nP: <\/b>If I were to ask you to write an article about the best all-day breakfasts in Singapore, what would be your top three picks?<\/span>\nI: <\/b>I was hoping you\u2019d ask! My all-time favourite has to be <\/span>Brawn and Brains Coffee<\/span><\/a> – their oven-baked molten eggs, topped with salmon and avocado, are to die for. I\u2019d eat there everyday if I could! (laughs)<\/span>\nUp next, <\/span>The Garden Slug<\/span><\/a>! This little cafe is tucked right outside the main belt of bars and restaurants in Telok Kurau, and cooks up really generous servings of breakfast goodness in a retro-themed hideaway. This place is grossly underrated – you\u2019ve to try it sometime!<\/span>\nMy last pick would probably be <\/span>Lola\u2019s Cafe<\/span><\/a> – the ever-popular brunch option. Safe, fuss-free breakfast – at least until they switch out their menus at 3pm!<\/span>\n[caption id=\"attachment_22031\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"1024\"]\"\" Despite having a soft spot for cats, Iris is loved by all furry friends[\/caption]\nP: <\/b>Your expertise is impeccable – I\u2019ll be sure to ask you for more recommendations soon. Now, let\u2019s touch on something we\u2019ve all seen on your profile – that you\u2019re a part-time cat lover!<\/span>\nI: <\/b>Yes! My love for cats know no boundaries – I\u2019ve bombarded my colleagues and friends with cute cat pictures to the point where they\u2019re in love with them as well! <\/span>\nI\u2019d also love to own a cat one day – preferably a Munchkin Scottish Fold, the ones with stubby legs and folded ears!<\/span>\n[caption id=\"attachment_22026\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"800\"]\"\" Iris feeds Deadpool his chimichangas – an ingenious office idea by the SEO team at Shopee Singapore[\/caption]\nP: <\/b>Your team must be really close – or really annoyed by each other! (laughs) Does being part of such a young department have its perks?<\/span>\nI: <\/b>Yes, it does! Everyone\u2019s really welcoming and supportive, and the divide between the creative and technical teams are barely noticeable even though our job scopes are really different. As a young team full of wacky ideas, we recently redecorated our office space with Post-It Notes and hand-drawn 8-bit graphics!<\/span>\n[caption id=\"attachment_22028\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"800\"]\"\" The SEO team works at making their office decor dreams a reality[\/caption]\nP: <\/b>Yes, I\u2019ve seen some of your masterpieces! Tell us more about them.<\/span>\nI: <\/b>The idea was brought up by our amazing team member, Kevin, who is also responsible for the 8-bit graphics, SEO stickers and the massive SEO team logo you see in our offices at Shopee Singapore. We found 8-bit versions of two superheroes we thought represented each team best: Iron Man for the technical team and their IT smarts; Deadpool for the creative team and their expertise with words. Not long ago, we started decorating and now we have the coolest office windows in Shopee! (laughs)<\/span>\nP: <\/b>Wow, looks like your team is headed for great things!<\/span>\nI: <\/b>We definitely hope so! We want our articles and collaborations to be the beginning of something bigger. If we become Shopee\u2019s centralised hub for SEO, we\u2019ll be able to optimise all created content from various departments. These were golden words from someone dear, who has always encouraged me to be confident in myself and strive for perfection. Hustling, if done right, \u00a0will get you far in various aspects of your professional life – from honing your craft to seizing the best opportunities. <\/span>\nIf you\u2019re an undergraduate looking to pursue a career in writing, take every chance to grow. Build up a portfolio of your own by starting a blog, or by doing some freelance writing. Consider doing writing internships where you can, and try learning the basics of Google analytics. The value of content and the attention it generates will only keep on rising, so keep pushing forward! <\/span>\n\n\n
