How do I choose my first stroller?

(Credit: @huanshi / Unsplash)

Before we dive into the best prams in Singapore, here are things to keep in mind when shopping for a baby stroller for your newborn or toddler!

  • Does the stroller have all the essential features for kids?

Strollers can come with a dizzying array of different features and configurations. However, there are some non-negotiables regarding baby strollers for your little ones. Apart from basic safety features, such as a five-point harness and quality wheels, a stroller should also include a sun canopy to shield your child from the sun, and washable fabric to guard against almost-guaranteed spills.

  • Is the stroller suitable for newborns?

If you didn’t already know, infants have trouble supporting the weight of their own heads for the first few months. If you’re shopping for a stroller for your newborn, make sure it is fully reclinable or has a lie-flat configuration!

  • What would you be using the stroller for?

Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent or a white-collar hustler, it’s important to take into account your lifestyle needs when picking the best pram for your tot. If you make frequent trips to town during the week, it might be best to opt for a stroller with enough storage space for your purse and baby essentials like diapers and wet wipes. On the flip side, a sturdy jogging stroller would be a better option for parents who like to go on runs.

  • What kind of features do you (really) need?

The best prams in Singapore can range from just over $50 to a few thousand dollars. Before you splurge on the latest, top-of-the-line stroller, consider if the additional features it boasts will be useful for you. (I mean, do you really need that cup holder?)

  • How long do you intend to use the stroller?

If you plan on having more than one child down the road, it might be more financially prudent to invest in a larger, convertible stroller that can accommodate more than one child at a time.

What is the difference between strollers?

Which stroller is allowed in flight?

Planning to bring along a stroller for your next family getaway? Take note that the sum of the length, width, and height of the stroller should not exceed 115cm. In addition, the total weight of the stroller must also be less than 7kg.

For flights out of Singapore, a stroller will be regarded as one piece of cabin baggage and will count towards your 7kg cabin baggage allowance. The good news? You’d also get an additional 6kg of cabin baggage allowance for infant essentials such as breast milk, infant food, and baby amenities. According to Singapore Airlines, if you’ve got a full-sized stroller you just can’t live without, you can also opt to buy a separate seat for your child! (Note: For more information, do check with your airline.)

Strollers are undoubtedly one of the most indispensable in the arsenal of tools for parenthood. Be it quick trips to the supermarket or a day out at the zoo, the baby stroller is your best bet for keeping your child safe and comfortable. However, too much time spent in the stroller can encourage sedentary behaviour in young children. Experts recommend strollers used only for young children under three years old, and for parents to encourage active exploration of children when out and about.
