How does IPL work?

(Credit: BLACKDAY / Shutterstock)

According to MedicalNewsToday, IPL removes unwanted hair by delivering multiple wavelengths of light energy. This energy targets hair follicles by heating the cells in the skin and breaking them down. Over time, the damaged tissue will be removed, and hair growth is thereby reduced or eliminated.

Is IPL hair removal safe?

Wondering if IPL is safe? According to the Cleveland Clinic, IPL is generally safe, especially for light skin tones. However, for dark skin tones that are melanin-rich, the heat from IPL devices may cause discoloration. Most at home IPL devices are also safe to use for intimate areas. However, we recommend lowering the intensity for more sensitive areas to avoid injury.

How to use an IPL device at home?

(Credit: Malikov Aleksandr / Shutterstock)

There are many compelling reasons to do IPL using a device at home. Apart from saving you a ton of money from buying salon packages, it’s also far more convenient to do it consistently. This is important as IPL is most effective when you do it in regular intervals (once every three to four weeks). That said, it can be daunting without professional help. To ensure you do it safely, don’t forget to take these necessary steps before and after each IPL session you do at home!

  • Shave first

Before going in with your IPL device, shave all visible hair and ensure that there is no hair remaining on the surface. Avoid waxing or plucking, as you’ll need some hair on the surface for the IPL to work. You can do this one day in advance, and prep your skin by moisturising it.

  • Wear safety goggles or sunglasses to protect your eyes

After you’ve shaved and ready to zap the hair follicles away, remember to wear your safety goggles to protect your vision. This is the same for both salon and at-home IPL treatments. Whether the brand says it is necessary or not, we recommend wearing them anyway to prevent any potential harm to your eyesight.

  • Sanitise the treatment area and the device

To prevent any gunk or build-up that may lower the effectiveness of the IPL, we recommend wiping the area down with a sanitising wipe. It’s also a must to clean your IPL device after each use. While salons would usually apply a cooling gel or a numbing cream to your treatment area, this step is optional for at-home treatments, unless you have extremely sensitive skin.

Pro Tip: You can use an antiseptic cream at home if you have low pain tolerance.

  • Moisturise and don’t forget sun protection

After you’ve done IPL on your skin, make sure to soothe it with your favourite body lotion or aloe vera gel and keep it moisturised to prevent irritation. We also recommend avoiding too much sun exposure after treatment.

  • Consistency is key

While salon IPL treatments are usually done once every three to four weeks, several home IPL home devices recommend doing it every one to two weeks when you’re just starting out. For instance, Braun recommends doing four to 12 weekly treatments, while Philips Lumea recommends doing it every two weeks for the first four sessions.

After your hair growth has been reduced significantly, you can lower the frequency to once every one to two months. On average, it takes about six months to see permanent results. However, this is largely determined by the thickness of your hair, the area you’re treating, as well as the frequency of treatments.
