19 Things To Do In KL For The Perfect Weekend Trip

If you’re like me and love Johor Bahru, another great alternative to explore with friends and family is Kuala Lumpur (KL). While it’s equally affordable, this city certainly doesn’t fall short in terms of exciting attractions and delectable local cuisines. Travelling with the kids? We’ve also listed some of our favourite family-friendly attractions to visit over the next long weekend!

Tourist attractions and iconic landmarks

1. Petronas Twin Towers

(Credit: James Kerwin / Wikimedia Commons)

If you haven’t visited before, this majestic attraction is a major landmark of KL that simply can’t be missed. Standing at a towering 1483 feet, the pair of towers holds the title of the world’s tallest twin skyscrapers. If you’re a fan of the 1999 heist film Entrapment, you might have recognised this magnificent structure in the background, so head on over to snap a picture with it! A tip is to arrive right as it opens at 9am, as it can get crowded later on. However, I’d say that the beautiful pictures around sunset hours are worth the squeeze.

Address: Petronas Twin Tower, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Concourse Level, 50088 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Nearest MRT/LRT Station: KLCC
Opening hours: Daily, 9am – 8.30pm
Price:
Adult ticket: RM98 (~SGD29.60)

2. KL Tower

For more picturesque views, visit the KL Tower! Check out the observation deck for a 360-degree indoor viewing experience and capture the gorgeous cityscape on camera. Since you’re already there, why not visit the sky terrace to enjoy the breeze while taking in the panoramic views from 300 meters above the ground? After, visit the iconic glass box to experience a whole new vantage point from the glass-floored platform.

If you’re in KL with your significant other, surprise them with an unforgettable experience at ORBIT Revolving Dining. Here, you’ll savour a tantalising fusion of both local and international flavours during both lunch and dinner buffets, including delicious local desserts such as Serawa Durian with Glutinous Rice. For the experience, I’d say that this is one of the best things to do in KL for the great views and memories.

3. Merdeka Square

(Credit: haifaida / Pexels)

Formerly known as the Padang, this is the historical spot where Malaya first declared its independence back in 1957. Today, it’s known as the venue of the annual Merdeka Parade and other political events. The intricate historical architecture and lush grass lawn remind me of the National Gallery in Singapore, so it’s safe to say that this tourist attraction is photo-worthy. The vibe is chill and relaxing, so it’s great for a family picnic. Additionally, don’t miss out on the light show to see the buildings beautifully illuminated, which takes place daily at 9pm. Other than that, Merdeka Square is surrounded by colonial-era buildings and other cultural landmarks that are worth checking out as well.

Sightseeing and natural attractions

4. Batu Caves

(Credit: julia lee / Pexels)

This cave complex was first named Kapal Tanggang after the folklore that reminds us of the importance of filial piety and gratitude. As a key religious site in KL, many visitors plan a visit here to seek blessings and visit the golden statue of Hanuman. Before you head up, spend some time checking out the art gallery cave and the intricate cave villa complex. Don’t miss out on visiting the iconic rainbow-coloured staircase that leads up to the cave temple as well. As you’ll be walking a fair bit, dress comfortably and wear a pair of sports shoes to make your experience more enjoyable.

Address: Batu Caves, Gombak, Selangor, 68100 Malaysia
Nearest MRT/LRT Station: Batu Caves Komuter Station
Opening hours: Daily: 7am – 9pm

5. KLCC Park

(Credit: Thể Phạm / Pexels)

After you visit the Petronas Twin Towers, pay KLCC Park a visit for a rejuvenating experience with friends or family. As a lush sanctuary that spans a whopping 50 acres, there’s plenty of room for the kiddos to run about as you chill in the shade. This park also offers a wide range of amenities, such as a children’s playground and a wading pool, that are sure to keep the young ones entertained.

Health enthusiasts or those trying to burn off some calories before feasting can also go on a jog along the designated jogging track while enjoying the surrounding greenery. My favourite part of KLCC Park has to be the elevated bridge for the magnificent view, and the 280m-tall water fountain. For a relaxing family day, this is one of the best things to do in KL that doesn’t require much planning.

6. Perdana Botanical Garden

(Credit: Perdana Botanical Garden / Facebook)

Looking for a spot for some Instagrammable photos? Perdana Botanical Garden is a great place to get some snaps in while admiring the beautiful flowers! Visit the Hibiscus and Orchid gardens to enjoy the brightly coloured flowers, or the deer park to see them being fed. If you need a break from all the walking, visit the waterfall section to chill in the shade and enjoy the therapeutic sound of water as it trickles down. It’s going to be warm and humid, so bring a cap and a portable fan to shield yourself from the heat.

7. KL Bird Park

(Credit: RivieraBarnes / Wikimedia Commons)

Home to both local and foreign birds, this bird sanctuary surprisingly houses almost 200 different species. If you’re like me, you’re probably under the impression that all bird parks are the same, so this one is worth a skip. I’d like to stop you there – KL Bird Park is the largest free-flight walk-in aviary in the world, so that means that you’ll be able to observe how the natural rainforest habitats of these birds are replicated here.

Unlike in Singapore, you’ll see the African Violet Turaco and the Channel-billed Toucan, which both boast beautiful plumage and vibrant feathers. Even though this bird park is just a quick drive from the city centre of KL, make sure to plan your time well. After all, you won’t want to miss the spectacular bird show that’s held at 12.30pm and 3.30pm daily, as it’s one of the most highly anticipated KL attractions!

Address: 920 Jalan Cenderawasih, Tasik Perdana, 50480 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Nearest MRT/LRT Station: KL Sentral
Opening hours: Daily: 9am – 5.30pm
Price:
Adult ticket: RM85 (~SGD25.70)
Child ticket: RM60 (~SGD18.20)

8. KL Forest Eco Park

(Credit: RivieraBarnes / Wikimedia Commons)

As one of the last untouched tropical rainforests left in the region, KL Forest Eco Park is one of the more popular destinations for those looking to reconnect with nature. That’s not to mention how it’s conveniently located in the city centre. If you’re visiting, you can expect a variety of activities catered to visitors of all demographics, including family picnics. Photography enthusiasts will enjoy the Canopy Walk across a steel aerial bridge that’s suspended 21 metres above ground, creating a unique vantage point that’s great for photos.

Hikers will also be delighted by the range of hiking trails. They vary in difficulty, so they’re great for all! Beginners can go for the Merbau trail, which is easier and experienced hikers can go for the Jelutong trail for steeper inclines and rugged terrains. To get your blood pumping, this is one of the best things to do in KL!

Address: Jalan Puncak, 50250 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Opening hours: Daily: 8am – 5.30pm
Nearest MRT/LRT station: Pasar Seni
Price:
Adult ticket: RM40 (~SGD12.20)
Child ticket: RM5 (~SGD1.60)

Cultural attractions

9. Petaling Street Market

(Credit: Alexey Komarov / Wikimedia Commons )

It’s a great time to visit Chinatown if you haven’t been there in a while, as a section of Chinatown underwent much-needed restoration efforts just last year. Check out the Petaling Street Market for souvenirs and quality replicas of designer bags and shoes at a fraction of their original prices.

After shopping, you’re bound to be hungry. Grab a bite from one of the street-food vendors or head to a nearby eatery to fuel up on fragrant Nasi Lemak and Goreng Pisang, or other types of culinary delights. If you’re planning on visiting Kwai Chai Hong, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the interactive murals. They’re embedded with QR codes for you to scan to learn more about the olden-day ways of residents, which I found interesting.

Address: Jalan Petaling, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Nearest MRT/LRT Station: KL Sentral
Opening hours: Daily: 10am – 9pm

10. Brickfields

(Credit: Shesmax / Wikimedia Commons )

Another one of the top things to do in KL includes a trip to Brickfields, KL’s version of Little India. Regardless of what you’re looking for, chances are that you’ll find it here. The stores here sell pretty much everything from Indian clothing to jewellery and other goods, and the street is decorated with brightly-coloured decorations. You also can’t miss out on any of the authentic Indian Food like Banana Leaf Rice from Saravanaa Bhavan Restaurant!

That said, the Thean Hou Temple is a popular Taoist attraction in this area that many visit to seek blessings from the revered deity. You’ll also be able to enjoy the scenic views atop Robson Hill. As one of the pioneer settlements in KL, you’ll be amazed at the number and variety of colonial structures found scattered around this area.

Address: Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad, 50470 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Nearest MRT/LRT Station: KL Sentral
Opening hours: Daily: 10.30am – 9pm

11. Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia

(Credit: Chongkian / Wikimedia Commons)

If you have a keen eye for art, I’d recommend a visit to the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia to view their numerous artefacts and extensive collection of Islamic art books. As the largest museum of Islamic Art in Southeast Asia, this award-winning museum is home to 12 permanent galleries that each have their unique highlights. So, you’ll be able to view pieces across various media, including textile, woodwork and ceramics. Unlike other museums that prioritise works from a select region, the Islamic Arts Museum prides itself on its attempts to curate a collection that’s truly representative of Islamic culture. For those looking for unique things to do in KL, this museum is the perfect place to spend the afternoon.

Address: Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad, 50470 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Nearest MRT/LRT Station: Muzium Negara
Opening hours: Daily: 9.30am – 6pm
Price:
Adult tickets: RM20 (~SGD6)
Children under 6 are admitted free

Shopping

12. Central Market

(Credit: Mohd Fazlin Mohd Effendy Ooi / Wikimedia Commons)

Although it started as a wet market, Central Market has transformed into a centre for Malaysian culture and art today. Here, expose yourself to the local cuisine and rich culinary heritage at Pasar Besar or try your hand at DIY Batik painting between rounds of shopping. Once you’ve shopped till you’ve dropped, treat yourself to a massage by a skilful masseuse at Manjakaki to relieve the tension in your muscles.

If you’re under the impression (like I once was) that Central Market is targeted at older age groups, think again! This area regularly hosts events that sell curated vintage clothing and artisan accessories, so there’s a fair bit of youthful energy here too. For comparison, these events remind me of those held at Haji Lane. If that’s what you enjoy, you’ll find shopping at Central Market one of the most satisfying things to do in KL, especially if you’re able to get your hands on some good loot!

Address: Central Market Annexe, Jalan Hang Kasturi, Lot 3.04-3.06, 50050 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Nearest MRT/LRT Station: Pasar Sani
Opening hours: Daily: 10am – 10pm

13. Jalan Alor Food Street

(Credit: *angys* / Wikimedia Commons)

For the sheer variety of street food that’s available, foodies are guaranteed to enjoy Jalan Alor. As you explore the street, you’ll realise that every dish weaves a story of Malaysia’s rich and long-standing culinary history. Although you may face long queues, my top pick has to be the Signature Roast Chicken Wings from Wong Ah Warh that have been carefully marinated and roasted to perfection for a juicy, tender finish. I’ve heard that the Ngau Kee Beef Noodles are also great for a hearty meal! But no meal is complete without dessert. So, top it all off with a durian dessert and leave satisfied. Take it from me – if you’re a foodie, this is one of the must-visit attractions in KL.

Address: Jalan Alor, Bukit Bintang, 50200 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Nearest MRT/LRT Station: Bukit Bintang
Opening hours: Daily: 24/7

14. Suria KLCC

(Credit: Marcin Konsek / Wikimedia Commons)

Located at the foot of the Petronas Twin Towers, this megamall is a must-visit KL attraction after you tour the popular tourist attraction upstairs. As KL’s premier shopping destination, Suria KLCC spans a million square feet, offering more than 300 speciality stores with a blend of designer fashion, international goods, and souvenirs. The epitome of shopping and retail, this mall provides unparalleled retail experiences, with its exclusive brands such as Dior Homme and Boucarad. Want to get glam? Pay a visit to one of the many beauty salons or barbers to change up your look. Either way, there are more than enough shops to keep you busy on your next visit!

Address: 241, Persiaran Petronas, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, 50088 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Nearest MRT/LRT Station: KL Sentral
Opening hours: Daily: 10am – 10pm

15. Nu Sentral

(Credit: *angys* / Wikimedia Commons)

While this mall is smaller than Suria KLCC, its strategic location is what attracts the crowd. Conveniently connected to KL Sentral, commuting to the city’s central transportation hub is seamless and fuss-free, which I appreciate in this sweltering heat! You can expect the typical brands here, so it’s the services that draw people in. If you’re in KL with a large group of friends, visit Breakout for an exhilarating escape room experience, or pop by Manekineko Karaoke to sing your hearts out. After, head to the ground floor to refuel with the many food and beverage options.

Address: 201, Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Kuala Lumpur Sentral, 50470 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Nearest MRT/LRT Station: Persiaran KLCC
Opening hours: Daily: 10am – 10pm

17.  Lalaspeed E Kart Raceway

(Credit: Vsatinet / Wikimedia Commons)

This racetrack is located on the roof of LaLaport Bukit Bintang City Centre, our favourite Japanese lifestyle shopping mall. Here, you’ll be able to zip down the racetrack in your e-karts while admiring cityscape views, including those of the stunning Merdeka 118 Tower in the distance. Safety is taken very seriously here, so children need to be at least 7 years of age to race on their own. Otherwise, you can opt for the tag-along option to have your little one ride tandem with you.

The exhibitions here are surreal and are sure to evoke a myriad of emotions, so this is one of the best things to do in KL if you want to momentarily forget about life’s stressors and enjoy a restful day.

What is the best way to get around KL?

(Credit: Sirap bandung / Wikimedia Commons)

KL has an integrated public transport network, but the most common modes of transport are the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) systems. For fuss-free payment, head to any ticket counter or convenience store on your first day to purchase a transportation card like TravelPass or Touch ‘n Go before you go on your way.

  1. LRT
  • Three lines – Kelana Jaya, Ampang and Sri Petaling Lines
  • Frequency of 5-7 minutes
  • Good for travelling within the city
  1. MRT
  • Two lines – Kajang and Putrajaya lines
  • Frequency of 5-12 minutes
  • Suited for travelling longer distances, such as across the city or to suburban areas
  1. RapidKL Bus
  • More than 100 routes
  • Avoid this mode of transport if you’re in a rush, as bus frequencies are known to be infrequent and inaccurate
  • Make sure to flag the bus early, if not, it’ll skip your stop
  1. Cab or ride-hailing services
  • Choose options with metered fares to avoid disputes or scams
  • Alternatively, Grab or Gojek are popular options as pricing is clear and the process is simple
