What are the different kinds of golf clubs and how to choose one that fits your needs?

(Credit: Cristina Anne Costello / Unsplash)

While bringing your Dad to different indoor golf spots this Father’s Day, why not pick up the sport yourself? As a beginner, it is important to learn about the different types of golf clubs for you to know what suits your needs.

There are five different types of clubs in a typical golfer’s bag: woods, irons, hybrids, wedges and putters.

  • Woods

The woods are the clubs with the largest heads. Do not be fooled by the large size, the head is usually hollow so it is rather light. They are used from the tee as they can launch the ball the longest distance and golfers can swing them the fastest. The drivers are part of the “wood” family of clubs and are considered the 1-wood. It offers the longest distance but the least control due to its flat and horizontal face.

  • Irons

Irons come in numbered sets, from 3-iron to 9-iron. You can choose an iron depending on how far you want to hit the ball. Irons are generally used when you are less than 200 yards away from the green*. The closer you are to the green, the higher the iron you will use.

*The green is the general target area of a golf hole as it contains the actual hole inside its perimeter.

A quick overview of when to use which iron:
3-iron = 100 to 205 yards.
4-iron = 90 to 190 yards.
5-iron = 80 to 175 yards.
6-iron = 70 to 165 yards.
7-iron = 65 to 155 yards.
8-iron = 60 to 145 yards.
9-iron = 55 to 135 yards.

  • Hybrids

As the name suggests, the hybrid is a combination between a wood and an iron. Similar to irons, hybrids are numbered (e.g., 2-hybrid, 3-hybrid, etc.), and they correspond to the irons they replace. They are great for beginners as they are easier to use and provide both distance and accuracy.

  • Wedges

Wedges are used for shorter shots that require precision. There are several types of wedges for different uses, like pitching wedges, gap wedges, sand wedges and lob wedges. They are generally differentiated by their loft degree, the higher the loft degree, the faster the ball will fly into the air.

  • Putters

Putters are used on the putting greens when golfers want to make their last strokes and knock the ball into the hole. They make relatively short and low-speed strokes that are precise and controlled. Choosing a putter is a personal experience and it has to feel right to the golfer. There are a variety of putters out there and they come in three styles of clubhead and three lengths.

As a beginner, other than recognising the different golf clubs, it is crucial to practise your swing and get the foundation right too. You can try using a golf swing trainer to help you master the perfect swing and grip, even in the comforts of your home.
