There’s no better way to explore your favourite holiday destinations than taking a road trip there. Since you’re already familiar with the typical tourist spots, take your time and explore the scenic countryside or travel like a true local with a Taiwan road trip. Regardless of whether you’re a seasoned road-tripper or a complete newbie, we’ve crafted the ultimate Taiwan itinerary for a week of fun on the road. You’re guaranteed to fall in love with Taiwan all over again!
Renting a car for your Taiwan road trip

Make sure to plan ahead of your Taiwan road trip, as it can make or break your experience. I’d recommend booking a car that can be collected from the airport for maximum convenience. For cheaper options, you can also take the train to other cities and rent a vehicle from there. Before choosing a car, consider factors such as the number of passengers and luggage space. Purchasing comprehensive insurance is also a great idea to ensure that you aren’t held financially liable in the case of any damages or unexpected issues.
When collecting your vehicle, you’ll need to produce your International Driver’s Permit (IDP), driver’s license, and passport. As the IDP application process can take up to a week or two, it’s a good idea to apply well in advance if you intend to travel.
Day 1 of your Taiwan road trip: West Taipei
Morning: Check into your accommodation

You’ll want to find a place to drop off your luggage instead of lugging it around. The Taipei Fullerton Hotel-Maison North is a great option as it’s located just 20 minutes from Taoyuan International Airport, so you’ll be there in no time and ready to set off. The rooms here are spacious, and it’s a comfortable place to stay. Otherwise, Just Sleep Ximending is a good option if you’re looking to save on accommodations. Both hotels offer parking, so getting to your car is easy in the mornings.

Afternoon: Visit the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall

Driving time and distance from the previous attraction: 17 minutes, 6 kilometres
As the food coma sets in, you’ll thank yourself for having already made the drive to this popular tourist attraction. Spanning a whopping 250,000 square metres, the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall is so large that it boasts both an indoor and outdoor exhibition area. Outside, you’ll find the Democracy Square and the National Concert Hall, amidst other attractions.
Done exploring? Head inside to view the exhibitions at the various exhibition halls and galleries. If you like unique art pieces like I do, you’ll enjoy the “I Am an Artist” displays. There are also other ongoing exhibitions that you’ll be intrigued by, such as the International Exhibition of Artistic Creations by People with Disabilities and The Ocean in the Dream exhibition. Hence, you have to add this spot to your Taiwan road trip itinerary even if you aren’t a typical fan of museums.

Nearest parking location: Zhongzheng District Office
Evening and dinner: Explore Ximending to shop till you drop
Driving time and distance from the previous location: 10 minutes, 2.1 kilometres
Ximending is a popular shopping district to add to your Taiwan itinerary. As one of the most popular shopping districts, there’s a large selection of stores here for you to get all the souvenirs you need for family and friends at home. In addition to shopping your heart out, soak up the vibrant atmosphere as you shop and enjoy the various street performances. Don’t miss out on a photo with the trademark of Ximending – the iconic rainbow street!
Food is also a large part of the experience at Ximending. For starters, try Ah Zong Mian Xian. This is a bowl of rice vermicelli in a thick, starchy broth that contains bamboo shoots and pork intestine. While you’ll undoubtedly feel like gobbling down the entire bowl, I’d recommend sharing with a friend or family member to save some stomach space for other delicious street snacks that you might chance upon.

Day 2 of your Taiwan road trip: Northern Coast
Breakfast: Give Yong He Soy Milk a go
Driving time and distance from Taipei to Da’an: 12 minutes, 3.3 kilometres
When in Taiwan, it’s a must to eat breakfast like the locals to fuel up for the day ahead. While there were long queues, I managed to order within 20 minutes of reaching the restaurant as the queue progressed quickly. The soy milk was creamy and smooth, and not overly sweet. Unlike some stores in Singapore that sometimes sell soggy youtiao, the ones from Yong He Soy Milk are freshly fried. So, they’re warm and crispy. If you’re not up for fried food, go for their Dan Bing (Egg Crepe), which is generously filled with ingredients and easy on the stomach.
Address: Number 102, Section 2, Fuxing South Road, Da’an District, Taipei City, Taiwan
Opening hours:
Tue: 12am – 1am, 5am – 2pm, 4pm – 1am

Midday: Visit Yehliu Geo Park to admire the geological landscape

Driving time and distance from the previous location: 48 minutes, 39.4 kilometres
Make the drive to Yehliu Geopark as it’s worth a visit on your Taiwan road trip. Here, you’ll be able to admire unique rock formations along the North Coast. You’ll also find children and adults alike marvelling at rocks of all shapes and sizes, including the mushroom and candle rocks. The most famous rocks are the Queen’s Head, Dragon’s Head Rock and Fairy’s Shoe.
Other than the geographical attractions, keep your eyes peeled as you’ll likely also spot interesting fossils of sand dollars and sea urchins. For those who enjoy the seaview like I do, you’re guaranteed to enjoy admiring the coastline from Yehliu Geopark. However, it may get hot if you’re planning to visit in the summer. So, stock up on sunscreen and hats for the family before your trip.

Afternoon: Explore Jiufen Old Street for its magical vibes

Driving time and distance from the previous location: 45 minutes, 32.9 kilometres
Fans of Studio Ghibli films will have to visit this old street for its ambience that replicates the vibe of the films. Perched atop the mountains, Jiufen Old Street is decorated with red lanterns. Coupled with the foggy mist that periodically rolls in from the ocean, this town is enveloped by a mysterious yet cosy atmosphere.
The shops here are small and intimate, as the owners themselves mostly man them. Snacks are also plenty, and I’d recommend trying A-Zhu Peanut Ice Cream (NT50, ~SGD2.20) or the nougat for some sweet treats as you peruse the items sold here. And because one can never have too much bubble tea, get a cup of Brown Sugar Bubble Tea from Xing Fu Tang before you leave to enjoy the warm boba and indulgent caramelised brown sugar atop fresh milk.
Address: Jiufenjishan Street, Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan
Opening hours: 24/7
Nearest parking location: Parking spots are available along the street
Dinner: Have dinner at Jiufen before heading back for an early night

Visit A-Mei Tea House for a memorable dining experience! Originally a blacksmith shop during the gold mining period, this shop’s exterior maintains the style and characteristics of that period. So, it makes for a great photospot for your feed! From the third floor of the teahouse, you’ll be able to enjoy the refreshing ocean breeze and the views that overlook the ocean. Go for the Beef Noodles (NT300, ~SGD13) or the Braised Platter (NT150, ~SGD6.60) to share with the group. For those with a sweet tooth like I do, don’t miss out on their handmade Premium Almond Jelly (NT90) for a post-meal treat.
If you’re understandably not too hungry after a day of non-stop snacking, I’d suggest getting the Signature Set (NT105, ~SGD4.60) from Yu Wan Bo Zai to savour the glass noodles and dense fish balls that they’re famous for. After dinner, head back to the hotel to rest. After all, you’ve had a long day of exploring.

Make the drive from Taipei to Hualien bright and early, and you might be able to catch the gorgeous sunrise as you pass the coastal roads. You’ll be hungry after the long drive, so fuel up at Gong Zheng Bao Zi before heading on your way. Fans of Xiao Long Baos (NT5, ~SGD0.25) will enjoy this spot as the baos are generously filled with meat and gravy. They’re also freshly steamed and will arrive piping hot shortly after you place your order. This store also offers various noodles and vermicelli (NT40, ~SGD1.75) if you’re craving something more filling to start the day.

Midday: Check out Taipingyang Park for a relaxing stroll or bike ride

Driving time and distance from the previous location: 4 minutes, 1 kilometre
A visit to Taipingyang Park is an activity that you have to add to your Taiwan road trip if you’re intending to travel with kids. After your comforting breakfast, enjoy the cool ocean breeze while the kiddos play at the pirate-themed playground within the park. Once they’re satisfied, take a stroll down the quiet roadside and head to Beibin Park. It’s straight ahead and shouldn’t take much time to reach. There, spend the rest of the morning admiring the unique pebble beach and taking photos. If you’ve been needing a restful activity to add to your Taiwan itinerary, this one will grant you some much-needed family time to unwind!

Lunch: Pop by Little Rabbit Vegetarian Cuisine

Drive duration and distance from the previous location: 5 minutes, 1.3 kilometres
Tucked away in a small corner of Hualien, this restaurant features homely decor and appetising vegetarian dishes that are sure to interest you. Don’t be fooled by the name, as this eatery also serves non-vegetarian options. The chefs are friendly and often recommend the San Bei Ji for some tender chicken cubes marinated in a thick, flavourful gravy. They’re also hospitable and offer refillable sides of stir-fried vegetables and tofu. Hence, Little Rabbit Vegetarian Cuisine is a cosy spot if you desire a nourishing meal that’s loaded with natural goodness.
Address: Number 51, Mingyi Street, Hualien City, Hualien County, Taiwan 970

Tue – Sat: 9.30am – 3pm, 5.30pm – 9pm

Afternoon: Visit Hualien Railway Culture Park

Drive duration and distance from the previous location: 2 minutes, within walking distance of 400 metres
As the previous Hualien Harbour Branch Office, the area underwent various revitalisation efforts back in 2011. Today, it has become one of the more frequented cultural parks in Hualien. During your visit, tour the original station and old trains. Don’t forget to snap some pictures with the iconic ones! You’ll also be able to view numerous exhibition areas that are scattered around the hall. Regardless of whether you’re a train enthusiast or not, add this to your Taiwan itinerary to get a taste of Hualien’s longstanding history.

Daily, 6pm – 12am
Nearest parking: Parking is available within the park
Evening: Go shopping and try the street food at Dongdamen Night Market

Drive duration and distance from the previous location: 1 minute, within walking distance of 64 metres
Like most night markets in Taiwan, this one offers plenty of street food and unique buys. The Dongdamen Night Market comprises four smaller zones – Fuding Night Market, Aboriginal Street, Ziqiang Night Market and Guangdong Street Night Market. As such, I’d suggest allocating a couple of hours to explore this area. From traditional cuisines to trendy snacks like Tang Hu Lu, this night market has it all! Unlike some night markets that can get a little stuffy, I love how Dongdamen Night Market is located right next to the sea. So, it’s cool and pleasant to stroll through. Just bring sufficient cash, as some vendors don’t accept electronic payment methods.
Address: Number 71, Zhongshan Road, Hualien City, Hualien County, Taiwan 970
Opening hours:
Tue – Sun: 10am – 8pm
Nearest parking: Parking lot along Chongqing Road
Day 4 of your Taiwan road trip: Sun Moon Lake and Tainan

Drive duration and distance from Taipei to Sun Moon Lake: 3 hours 25 minutes, 243 kilometres
Bid farewell to your hotel in Taipei and get all your bags packed, as you’ll be moving to another hotel that’s much nearer to the attractions in Southern Taiwan. This will help reduce your daily commuting time, so you’ll have more opportunities to explore different neighbourhoods.
Morning: Check into your new hotel

An accommodation near Sun Moon Lake is a great option if you want a change of scenery after staying in the metropolis for the past few days. My pick is the Sun Moon Lake Bamboo Rock Garden for a hotel that’s out of the ordinary. Despite being close to the highway, the surroundings of this hotel are quiet and serene. It’s therefore good if you want to relax and unwind while still being able to enjoy the beauty of Sun Moon Lake from the comfort of your room.
The rooms here double as “butterfly suites”, so you’ll be able to spot butterflies while resting in your room. This hotel is also an ecotourism hub which houses a variety of bamboo species and animals. If you’re interested in all things eco-friendly, sign up for their handicraft classes or guided ecotours to enrich your experience. If this isn’t your cup of tea, you can still have your pick of hotels, as this area is filled with them.
Address: Number 8, Zhongshan Road, Yuchi Township, Nantou County, Taiwan 555, Bamboo Rock Garden

Nearest parking: Bamboo Stone Garden Parking Lot
Lunch: Have an early lunch at Old Papa Black Tea

Drive duration and distance from the previous location: 5 minutes, 3.2 kilometres
Most well-known for its black tea, Old Papa Black Tea often sees snaking queues with excited tourists. If you’re like me, you might have thought that black tea was boring. However, Old Papa Black Tea offers beverages that are bound to keep you on your toes. These include variations such as Black Tea Lattes (NT55, ~SGD2.40) and Bubble Teas (NT55, ~SGD2.40). For a small taste of happiness, Papa’s Braised Pork Rice (NT60, ~SGD2.65) and Yi Noodles (NT60, ~SGD2.65) are both great options if you’re craving a hearty meal that’s infused with the owner’s care for his craft. The food here is also affordable and value for money, so it’s a good pitstop before you walk back to your room to rest or head off to explore Sun Moon Lake proper.
Address: Number 50, Zhongxing Road, Shuishe Village, Yuchi 555, Taiwan
Price:
Food from NT15 (~SGD0.60)

Afternoon: Explore Sun Moon Lake and its attractions

Drive duration and distance from the previous location: 14 minutes, 6.8 kilometres
Take advantage of the good weather and bike down the Sun Moon Lake Bikeway, which is slightly longer than 6 kilometres. If you have the chance to, cycling across the Yongjie and Tongxin bridges is a memorable experience that you’ll remember for a long time. These bridges span across valleys and pass through lakeside beaches, creating a scenic view that’s hard to find elsewhere.
If you’ve been feeling worried lately, visit Wenwu Temple on the north shore to ask for blessings. Here, you’ll also get an excellent view of the lake from the terrace on the top floor. For those feeling active, take a hike around the lake and catch the sunset around dusk. With so many attractions to explore, a day trip to Sun Moon Lake is one of the best things you can do on your Taiwan road trip.

Unlike some of the other street markets, the Ita Thao Shopping Street is run by the indigenous Thao people. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to catch some of their traditional dances and music performances. Thinking of getting some souvenirs for friends or family back home? Pop by Tea18 Dew Tea House for some artisanal souvenirs that are sure to impress, whether it’s the intricate packaging or the taste. Popular options include their Black Tea Cookies and the flaky Egg Rolls. Since you’re already here, give their famous Ruby18 Ice Cream (NT120, ~SGD5.25) a try to indulge in some warm tapioca pearls and soft serve. Delicious!

Day 5 of your Taiwan Road Trip: Visit the Alishan Forest
Morning and breakfast: Head to Alishan Tea Plantation to sample Oolong tea

Drive duration and distance from Yuchi to Alishan: 2 hours 26 minutes, 132 kilometres
If Taiwan’s tea is considered excellent, then the tea on the Alishan Tea Plantation is top-notch. Farmed with the utmost care, the tea leaves here produce a balanced brew that’s herbal yet floral, while being light on the palate. Here, you’ll be able to taste both of the two main tea cultivars. Go for the Golden Lily variant if you prefer a creamy mouthfeel. Alternatively, pick the Qingxin, which is more fruity and sweet. For food, give the wild boar a try if you’re not too squeamish. Millet wine and mochi are also widely available in these areas, as it’s a staple crop for many indigenous tribes that reside in the area. For tea enthusiasts, this is an attraction that you can’t miss on your next Taiwan road trip!

This street holds the title of Taiwan’s highest-altitude old street. With traditional wooden buildings and quaint souvenir stores, the street is bathed in a nostalgic atmosphere that’s not unlike that of Jiufen Old Street. While you’re here, don’t miss the baked millet doughnuts and other snacks like Caozaiguo, a traditional snack in Taiwan. If you’re visiting on a sweltering day, getting a slushy Aiyu drink with basil seeds and brown sugar will help to quickly quench your thirst and hydrate you for the hours of shopping to come.

Afternoon: Stop by Fenqihu to admire the bamboo forest and enjoy local produce

Drive duration and distance from the previous location: 3 minutes, within walking distance of 450 metres
Fenqihu is a charming little mountain town in Chiayi. If you enjoy exploring natural sights like I do, the Fenqihu Nature and Trail Loop are worth a hike. Other than the winding bamboo grove, the trail also connects to scenic areas like Dadongshan. So, you’re guaranteed some spectacular views!
Besides that, Fenqihu is also famous for its bento boxes, as passengers would historically stop by to purchase bento lunchboxes before taking the train. It’s hence a great idea to get your hands on one of these lunchbox meals, which also doubles as a precious souvenir of your time in Taiwan. If I were you, I’d want to add this to my Taiwan road trip to experience these magnificent sights firsthand!
Evening: Pay the Fenqihu Loco Shed Exhibition Hall a visit before heading back

Drive duration and distance from the previous location: 2 minutes, within walking distance of 450 metres
As the last remaining loco shed of the Alishan Forest Railway, the Fenqihu Loco Shed was closed for restoration activities due to its dilapidated state. Now that it’s open and back in business, it serves as an exhibition site for the old steam trains. If your children love trains, this is one of the must-visit attractions to add to your Taiwan itinerary!
Check out exhibitions such as ‘Memories of Mountain Journeys – Fenqihu’ for an experience that combines dazzling visual and audio effects to narrate Fenqihu’s historical role as a train station. On your visit, you’ll also see various vendors selling their goods and wares. So, it’s not too late to purchase a couple of souvenirs for your family and friends back home.

Go for the Taiwanese Omelette with Ham (NT60, ~SGD2.65) alongside a slice of Egg Toast (NT40, ~SGD1.75) for a meal that’s bound to leave you satisfied. Take your time to explore the sandy beaches, towering limestone formations, and the overhead banyan trees. As your children play in the sand, make sure to snap some pictures with the gorgeous ocean in the background to commemorate your time in Taiwan. Afterwards, visit the Kenting Main Street to hunt for some street food and last-minute souvenirs before you bid Taiwan farewell.

Afternoon: Head back to your hotel to pack and travel to the airport

As reluctant as you are, it’s always a good idea to head back early so you’ll have sufficient time to pack. Once you’re all packed up, check out of your hotel and head to Taoyuan International Airport to await your flight. Wondering how to get there? Check out our guide on all things to know about transport in Taiwan to get there without the hassle!

Even if you’re a seasoned driver, navigating the traffic conditions in a new country can be challenging at first. Here are some tips for a smooth and safe drive:

- Use a GPS such as Google Maps to navigate smoothly
When is the best time to visit Taiwan?

The ideal time to visit for a Taiwan road trip is between March and May, or between September and November. These periods offer better weather conditions, such as lower temperatures and less rain, which will benefit your sightseeing and driving experience.
Conversely, avoid visiting between June and August as the weather is more unpredictable. Median temperatures are higher, and there is a heightened likelihood of typhoons occurring.
