Best matcha cafes in Singapore to try
1. Hvala
All matcha lovers probably know about this place by now but if you’re new, Hvala is the most well-known matcha cafe in Singapore that has earned the hearts of many. Besides drinks, they are also one of the few in Singapore who serve killer matcha desserts from cakes to ice cream. Although their famous Chijmes outlet has closed, their newly opened space at Odeon 333 (near City Hall MRT) awakens your tastebuds to a new menu! Sit on the tatami floor cushions for a unique dining experience and try new items like the Matcha Kaya Toast ($9.90) or stick to the classic Matcha Lattes that come in premium or ceremonial grade – our personal favourite is the Matcha Hojicha Latte ($6.90)! For newbies, ceremonial matcha is the highest quality grade of matcha available and is smoother plus less bitter than premium grade matcha.
Must Try: Matcha Kaya Toast ($9.90), Matcha Hojicha Latte ($6.90)
Address: 333 North Bridge Road, #01-11, S(188721)

2. KYŌ KOHEE
All girl bosses and guys working a nine to five in the CBD area have maxed out their luck because KYŌ KOHEE is a walk away! This cafe offers both authentic Japanese matcha and coffee at reasonable prices given their quality. We recommend trying the Okumidori Matcha Latte (from $6.90) crafted with ceremonial grade matcha for a well-rounded flavour. Alternatively, add Hokkaido milk if you fancy a creamier version. This matcha cafe is also perfect for students in Singapore who need a study spot and a midday caffeine fix – beware of the lunch crowd though!

From light bites to heavier meals, this matcha cafe in Singapore has your back. Try not to let your mouth water as you read our recommendations! One of their best sellers is the Omelette Hayashi Plate ($15.99) that consists of a golden, fluffy omelette covered in savoury Hayashi stew, all on top of fragrant rice. After filling your stomach up, share the Maccha Tiramisu ($7.99), one of the best matcha desserts in Singapore, with your friends to end off the experience on a pleasant note. We especially love that it isn’t overly sweet!

4. Matchaya
This next matcha cafe in Singapore is another popular option for many with four locations islandwide. If you plan on visiting Matchaya, their flagship store is located at Takashimaya, which is super convenient if you want to shop after! Besides their recommendations on the menu, their Matcha Milk (from $6) is a good starter we think you should try. But take note that the drink might be a bit grainy from their sifting method – tho, that likely means you’re getting some real legit matcha. If you’re on the lookout for matcha desserts in Singapore, you’re in luck. The Uji Matcha Soft Serve (from $6) has generous hints of matcha without being too bitter – the perfect way to beat the heat!

Matcha comes in all textures and tastes, the Tsujiri Premium Parfait in particular, has a nice earthy note that balances the sweet notes from the strawberry sauce and Basque cheesecake crumbs. What’s more, this premium outlet has savoury dishes like the Unagi Cold Spaghetti with House Sauce – perfect for your brunch date!

They even import their high quality green tea powder from Kyoto so you can rest assured it’s authentic. On our list of must-try items is the Iced Matcha Latte Espresso ($8). Its rich combination of matcha and coffee notes will give you that boost of energy for your day ahead. On the contrary, their Matcha Latte tends to be more milky and sweet! Oh and don’t forget to snap pictures of Kurasu Singapore’s modern aesthetic – it will look good on your Instagram feed, for sure!

It isn’t halal certified yet but they do not use any pork, lard or alcohol in their menu. And on top of that, they’re also vegetarian-friendly! They are famous for their super soft and chewy Warabi Mochi as well as Matcha Obanyaki that has a generous amount of filling. 8. Cafe Usagi TOKYO
This no doubt deserves a spot on our list of matcha cafe recommendations in Singapore. Chewy, cold and sinful is how we would describe the Mochi Ice Cream in Cafe Usagi TOKYO. Indulge in the velvety ceremonial matcha or genmaicha ice cream wrapped in soft and chewy mochi skin any day for a refreshing taste. On a hot day, go for their Warabi Mochi Ceremonial Uji Matcha Drink – the baby of a bubble tea and matcha latte drink, featuring smooth matcha and chewy warabi mochi.

9. LITTLE GLASS STAND
This is another matcha cafe in Singapore that is clearly built for CBD workers – how lucky! LITTLE GLASS STAND is a matcha bar that’s founded by the creators behind Glass Roasters, a cafe in Tiong Bahru. They have matcha drinks that have a pretty strong profile. For instance, their Samidori Latte has a rather strong umami flavour profile with floral notes. They also have the earthy Kagoshima that’s more suitable for those who prefer something lighter. Accompany it with their banana bread during your snack break for a more filling option!

Sick of the typical matcha latte? Combine strawberry and matcha for the ultimate refreshing drink! This quaint matcha cafe in Singapore is on the second floor of Hong Lim Complex and has a killer Strawberry Matcha Latte with a good level of sweetness – but most importantly, they don’t hold back on the strawberry puree! A more OG alternative would be the Signature Spring Matcha which comes unsweetened – enough to wake you up, for sure.

11. Calligraph Coffee
This is probably a hidden gem on our list of matcha cafes in Singapore. You find matcha lattes often but have you ever tried a nutty matcha? Calligraph Coffee’s Miyabi drink with oat milk is a rare find that we’re not going to gatekeep. This is a light alternative to the Zen Matcha Latte which caters better to those who love a strong and rich matcha. Although the prices may be a bit steep, we say the quality you get is worth every cent. Make sure to put this cafe on your list of study spots with good matcha-based drinks!
Must Try: Miyabi drink with oat milk ($9.20), Zen Matcha Latte ($9.20)

We’re not kidding when we say this matcha cafe in Singapore has an extensive menu. With over 20 drinks and 25 dessert options (we’re not even counting their food menu yet), you’ll never get bored of the food and drinks here! The matcha desserts they serve are some of the best you’ll taste in Singapore. We recommend the Matcha Shiratama Parfait ($11.80) that comes with matcha pudding, addicting red bean paste and mochi balls. For drinks, the Iced Matcha Latte ($7.00) is fragrant with a slight bitter aftertaste, and do take note that it comes sweetened! Want your matcha fix to be more than just drinks? Nestled on the street of Kampong Bahru is Onne, a Japanese fusion cafe that houses really good matcha desserts in the whole of Singapore. This is one of the few indoor matcha cafes in Singapore that is pet-friendly, allowing you to stop by as you walk the dogs to grab brunch! Psst.. your dogs will appreciate the air conditioning too. The star among their dessert menu would be the Matcha Misu which is a tiramisu but with matcha – and the best part? Prices start from $6 for their amazing desserts!

Where does the highest quality matcha come from?
Most if not all the time high quality matcha comes from Japan, particularly in the Uji region which is part of the Kyoto Prefecture. Wonder what Uji matcha tastes like? Think bright, grassy notes with a subtle sweet flavour profile. Additionally, matcha from Fukuoka is also of high quality. While they both share the same quality, Fukuoka matcha has a distinct character – deeper, more robust, and often with a hint of toastiness.
