But first, what do you need to bring to the gym?

If you’re very new to the gym, you might wonder, “Oh, what should I bring?” It’s definitely different from stepping into professional class studios like Absolute Cycle or The Yoga Movement, where everything is usually provided. Here’s a handy list of essentials for your gym session:

  • Water bottle – stay hydrated throughout your workout.
  • Workout clothes – comfortable, breathable activewear.
  • Training shoes – proper footwear for support and safety.
  • Towel – for wiping sweat or using gym equipment.
  • Lock – if the gym provides lockers for your belongings.
  • Headphones – for music or guided workouts.
  • Fitness tracker or smartwatch – optional, to monitor your progress.
  • Gym gloves – optional, for weightlifting or protecting your hands.
  • Extra set of clothes – if you plan to shower and change after your workout.

1. The Gym Pod

Private gym space at affordable prices.

Gym membership price: From $12.90/month

For true-blue beginners, I get it – starting your fitness journey can feel pretty intimidating. But don’t worry, The Gym Pod has got you covered! With its private pods, take your time to get familiar with all the gym equipment. You can book 30-minute slots and have the space all to yourself (or invite a friend and split the cost).

One regular even mentioned, “Honestly, such an underrated perk to just book a pod, blast my music. It’s like having my home gym!” Sounds like a dream, right? Plus, The Gym Pod has other cool concepts like the Flow Pod for a private virtual Pilates class or the Golf Pod for practising on a simulator.

Editor’s personal review on The Gym Pod: “The Gym Pod booking process is straightforward and seamless through the app. You’ll receive a PIN code shortly before your workout, which allows you to unlock the gym pod. Space-wise, it’s more than sufficient for a solo session. You can comfortably complete an upper-body workout and finish off with a run on the treadmill. While the setup isn’t fancy, it’s a solid option for beginners or those who feel intimidated by traditional public gyms.”

Address: The Gym Pod @ 131 Bukit Merah, 131 Jalan Bukit Merah, #01-1567, S(160131)

2. Anytime Fitness

More than 100 outlets nationwide.

Gym membership price: From $85*/month, with prices varying based on the home gym and membership package you select.

As a gym girlie of 2 years, I’m a regular at Anytime Fitness; what I love most is the flexibility to hop between different outlets without paying extra – anytime, anywhere, literally! I’ve worked out at the Bugis, Orchard, Bedok, and NEX outlets, and they’re all super clean and well-maintained. One thing to note though, the equipment can vary from one outlet to another, so it’s good to check ahead if you’re looking for something specific.

They also offer free classes like yoga and Muay Thai, which I haven’t tried yet but always look kinda cool when I see them happening. Yoga, in particular, seems like a great low-intensity active rest day activity – perfect to balance out the strength training on other days. If you’re looking for variety and flexibility in your fitness routine, Anytime Fitness ticks all the boxes!

Editor’s personal review on Anytime Fitness: “Anytime Fitness has been my go-to gym for about three years now. What I really like is the flexibility to work out at different locations – I can easily find a suitable outlet to train with my boyfriend or friends. While some branches are more well-equipped than others, my favourite is still the Bugis outlet. It has a wide range of equipment, especially for leg workouts, and even when it gets crowded, I rarely have to wait long for machines. Everyone there is friendly and generally willing to share equipment.”

Address: NEX, 23 Serangoon Central, #04-73/74/75, S(556083)
Check out other locations here.

*Please note that prices may change if you frequent an outlet that is not your designated home gym. Be sure to confirm all pricing details with the staff before signing up for a membership.

3. GoFit

Smart design areas with AI-based trainers.

Gym membership price: From $88/month

It’s common for gyms to have specific zones like cardio, free weights, and more, but GoFit has taken it up a notch with their Super Circuit Zone. It’s a clever mix of cardio and strength training that gives you a full-body burn in a 30-minute HIIT workout. All you need to do is follow the numbers on the floor – simple, efficient, and super effective.

For a personalised experience, book a slot at their MyGoZone, where virtual classes are led by AI-based fitness trainers. And for those days when you’re feeling extra sore after a tough workout, GoFit’s City Hall outlet offers assisted stretch therapy to help your muscles recover. Members have also spoken highly of the Clementi outlet. One Google reviewer, YT Cai, shared: “I’m a Clementi resident, and GoFit Gym has been a great place to work out. The gym is very well maintained, clean, and the equipment is always in good condition. The overall environment is comfortable and motivating. The classes are good and well-organised, suitable for different fitness levels. I’d also like to give special mention to William for his good service – he is friendly, helpful, and professional. Highly recommended for anyone in the Clementi area looking for a quality gym.”

Address: 321 Clementi Avenue 3, #06-06/07/08, S(129905)

4. The Right Fit

Specialised training packages for different fitness goals.

Gym membership price: From $540 for 6 months access

All-day access is awesome, but if you’re still getting the hang of using gym equipment properly, guidance is key. That’s where The Right Fit stands out from other 24-hour gyms in Singapore. They offer seven specialised packages tailored to help you meet your fitness goals. Whether you want to tone your abs with the FIT Core Building, get your cardio in with FIT Boxing, or anything in between, their trainers will guide you through it.

What’s especially impressive is their FIT Senior programme, which comes with no minimum session requirement. Designed to promote active ageing, this thoughtful package focuses on low-impact exercises and functional movements to help seniors stay fit, mobile, and independent—making it a great option for parents or grandparents. The supportive environment is echoed in member feedback as well. One Google reviewer, hazziLiz, shared: “Recently started going for personal training here, and I must say, Raj is really patient with me. He understands what I need and guides and pushes me just the right amount, so I don’t feel overwhelmed or intimidated as I do at regular gyms. I feel very much at ease here, and the atmosphere is friendly, cool, and just right for me.”

5. 24xFitness

Remember the former gym chain California Fitness (CF)? Well, former CF coaches and members have come together to create 24xFitness. With over 50 years of combined experience in the industry, this gym truly understands what fitness enthusiasts need.

24xFitness has two outlets — one in Bugis and the other in Paya Lebar — and both are fully equipped with a wide range of equipment, including squat racks, pull-up bars, a Viper TRX station, and battling ropes to help you torch those stubborn underarm fats. One Google review highlighted, “Love the heavy rack of weights and the family vibe here. I’ve benefited from great coaching advice from members and trainers who are always on hand to correct form and techniques.” It’s that sense of community and support that makes 24xFitness oh-so-good!

6. 24/7 Fitness (formerly known as Gymmboxx)

Gym membership price: From $98/month

24/7 Fitness, formerly known as GymBoxx, has undergone a complete revamp and is now sporting a fresh new look with a Tiffany blue colour scheme — after all, blue is the colour of trust! The gym’s transformation is more than just cosmetic; they’ve upgraded their facilities to offer everything you need for a solid workout. With standard squat racks, dumbbells up to 50kg, and plenty of other equipment, nothing is lacking.

Still sceptical about the revamp? Don’t be! Their Ulu Pandan CC outlet has a stellar 4.8-star Google rating, with many users praising its cleanliness and relaxed vibe. One reviewer mentioned, “Pretty clean and relaxing place for training. Well-equipped with a showroom, lockers, and a body analysis machine. Staff are also very friendly.” Looks like 24/7 Fitness is doing something right!

It’s got everything you need for a comfortable, enjoyable workout experience – from a rooftop pool and spacious changing rooms to shower facilities and a cosy lounge area.

Post-workout, you can unwind with complimentary coffee and freshen up at their beautifully designed dressing area, complete with Dyson hair dryers. It’s clear that MSFIT understands what women value in a gym because it’s built by women, for women. Members have echoed this sentiment in their reviews. Google reviewer HM Wong shared: “I love that this gym is an all-women space, and it feels welcoming and motivating. My trainer, Jasmine Tan, is incredibly dedicated and always keeps track of my progress, making sure I’m doing each exercise correctly. She pushes me just enough while still making me feel comfortable. I’ve seen real improvement since joining!”

The Gym provides a balanced and practical workout environment with its spacious, open-concept layout. It’s a great option whether your goal is to slim down, build strength, improve endurance, or simply stay active – all without breaking the bank. Spread across two levels, the gym houses an extensive selection of strength equipment, thoughtfully arranged to ensure there’s plenty of room between stations, so the space never feels tight even during busier hours.

For those seeking a solid alternative that sits between a full-service commercial gym and a public option like ActiveSG, this gym strikes a good balance in terms of facilities and affordability. Regular members have praised its consistency and value as well. Google reviewer Hartono Ong shared: “Simple and solid gym, with well-maintained equipment and a friendly owner. Two floors to train in, with a separate room available for functional training. I’ve been a regular for approximately three years and plan to continue. The price is reasonable, especially if you purchase the annual package.”

Members often also highlight the gym’s value and setup. Google reviewer Yong Xiang Yeo noted: “Unbeatable value for money. Six to eight power/squat racks with plenty of space – best for those who like free weights and rack exercises.”

What is the best time to go to a 24-hour gym?

Based on my personal experience, 6am on weekdays is a great time to hit the gym. It’s early enough to avoid the rush, but you’ll still have plenty of time to get a solid workout in before the 7am crowd of working professionals starts flooding in. Similarly, if you’re planning to go in the evening, after 9pm is a sweet spot on weekdays, as the crowds tend to thin out and you can enjoy a more relaxed workout.

But if you’re after absolute peace and quiet, midnight to 5am is when you’ll have the gym pretty much all to yourself – haha, it’s like your own private space!

How should you train at the gym?

gymming together with a friend at Anytime Fitness Orchard

Personally, I like to research routines on YouTube or TikTok to find something that fits my goals. There are tons of great workout videos that cater to different fitness levels. If you’re just starting out, though, I’d recommend joining group classes first. They’re a great way to learn proper form, get comfortable with different exercises, and build confidence before experimenting on your own. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you can mix things up and tailor your routine to what works best for you!
