What is a pottery class?

pottery classes singapore
(Credit: Earl Wilcox / Unsplash)

A pottery class is a class where individuals come to learn how to make different ceramics such as pots, bowls, jars, saucers and candle holders. The most common material used in Singapore for pottery is clay, which is often confused with the term ‘ceramic’. It is to note that while clay is a type of ceramic, ‘ceramic’ is a term that encompasses various materials that harden when heated. This includes earthenware, stoneware, porcelain, and bone china. As such, your ceramic wares may not typically be made out of clay!

When it comes to clay pottery classes, there are two main techniques used. The first is handbuilding, where you use only your hands and some simple tools to potter. The second technique is wheel throwing, which refers to the end-to-end process of creating ceramic wares on a moving potter’s wheel. The best pottery classes in Singapore usually have classes that use both techniques so as to better cater to a wider range of customers with different skill sets.

Best pottery classes in Singapore for your Valentine’s Date

1. Dream Art

If you’re looking for that dream studio which offers some of the best pottery classes in Singapore for couples, then Dream Art is the place for you! Using 600g of clay, you will get to create your own personalised work of art such as a cup, bowl or vase.

For more advanced classes, you can try out the Pottery Wheel with Sculpture and Pottery Wheel with Slips Decoration (both available on Dream Art Official Store) where you get to learn more in-depth on how to turn your ceramics into your favourite animal or cartoon characters. This will make a great handmade gift for your other half too!

 Pottery Class by The Potters
(Credit: RaveGroup)

Unleash your creativity and hone your pottery-making skills at this Pottery Class by The Potters (available on RaveGroup) where you’ll learn how to make your own pottery in just one and a half hours. This clay pottery making hands-on workshop is inclusive of glazing, which is the applying of a liquid suspension of finely ground minerals onto the surface of bisque-fired ceramic ware by brushing, pouring or dipping. Glazing can create cool glossy effects for your artwork depending on your application technique. So experiment with dipping, dripping or sponging your glaze at this session!

Conducted in a small class environment of up to five people, you’ll definitely have ample time to consult the trainers. But if you’re intending to give your ceramic away as a gift, do note that due to time constraints and the long process of firing the clay, you are not able to bring home your end product on the same day. Instead, the studio will call you when the clay is ready for collection. So, be sure to factor this lead time into your gifting plans.
