Pickleball caught my attention a few months ago, and I couldn’t help but wonder — what’s so fun about it? Why is it gaining so much popularity all of a sudden? So, I decided to do a little digging and found out just why this sport is taking Singapore by storm. From its easy-to-learn rules to its social and low-impact nature, pickleball is becoming the go-to game for people of all ages. If you’re a complete beginner like me, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about pickleball in Singapore – including where to play and how to own the court (slayyy~)!

Serve up some fun: Your ultimate guide to playing pickleball in Singapore!

What is pickleball?

Imagine if tennis, badminton, and ping pong had a lovechild – that would be pickleball. This fast-paced and social sport is played on a smaller court with a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball, which resembles a wiffle ball.

Originating in the United States in the 1960s, pickleball was created as a family-friendly activity. However, over the years, it has evolved into a highly competitive sport played worldwide. We are (finally) catching on to the trend, with pickleball courts and clubs popping up across the island!

Key characteristics of pickleball (aka what makes it different from Tennis)

While pickleball may seem like a miniature version of tennis, it has several distinct features that set it apart:

  • Smaller court: Unlike a full-sized tennis court, a pickleball court is about one-third the size, making it less physically demanding.
  • Paddle instead of a racket: Instead of using a strung racket like in tennis, pickleball players use a solid paddle made of wood or composite material.
  • Lightweight plastic ball: The ball used in pickleball is lightweight and perforated, which slows it down and allows for longer rallies, emphasising strategy over sheer power.

How do you play pickleball

Pickleball equipment for beginners

Before stepping onto the court, you’ll need the right gear to get started. Here’s what you need:

  • Pick a paddle that feels comfortable in your hand and suits your height and playing style. Beginners often benefit from a lighter paddle for better control. Our top pick? The Tumaz Pickleball Paddles – with an ideal size of 39 x 19.8 cm and sweat-absorbing grip tape, they’re designed for maximum comfort and performance.
  • Choose court shoes with good grip to prevent slipping, especially on indoor surfaces.
  • Wear breathable and moisture-wicking sports attire for maximum comfort during play.

Court rules

It’s also important to know the basic rules of pickleball to keep the game fun and fair. Here are the key rules to remember:

  • Serving: Start with an underhand serve, keeping the ball below your waist and hitting it diagonally across the court.
  • Double bounce rule: The receiving team must let the ball bounce before returning it, and the serving team must allow it to bounce before making their next shot.
  • The Kitchen (Non-volley zone): A 7-foot area near the net where players can’t volley the ball, keeping the game fair and preventing excessive smashing.
  • Volleying: Once the double-bounce rule is followed, players can volley the ball (hit it in mid-air), but they must stay out of the kitchen.
  • Switching sides: In doubles, players rotate serving turns. When a team loses a rally, the next player in rotation serves.
  • Faults: A fault occurs if the ball goes out of bounds, into the net, or if a player volleys from the non-volley zone.

Basic gameplay

  1. Choose either singles or doubles play.
  2. Grab a pickleball paddle and a perforated ball. The game can be set up on a badminton court, where you can place your own pickleball net.
  3. Stand behind the baseline and serve underhand diagonally to your opponent’s service box. Ensure the ball clears the non-volley zone.
  4. After both sides let the ball bounce, players can volley or play groundstrokes (hit the ball after it bounces).
  5. Only the serving team can score points. A rally begins when the serving team serves, and if any faults occur during the rally, the serving team does not score, and the serve rotates to the opposing team. The opposing team then starts a new rally and can score points during their turn.
  6. Keep playing until one team reaches the point limit — usually 11, 15, or 21 — winning by at least two points.

Bonus tips on how to play pickleball for beginners

  • Start with a forehand grip: This is the most common grip used by beginners and provides good control over the paddle.
  • Control over power: Precise, well-placed shots are often more effective than hitting the ball as hard as possible.
  • Master the dink shot: A soft, controlled shot that lands in the opponent’s kitchen can be a strategic way to disrupt their play.
  • Communicate in doubles: Good communication with your partner prevents confusion and unforced errors.
  • Practice footwork: Being able to move efficiently on the court is key to getting to your shots and positioning yourself correctly. Focus on practicing side-shuffling, lunges, and quick direction changes.

Where to play pickleball in Singapore

Of course, the best tip for beginners to master pickleball is regular practice. The more you play, the sharper your reflexes, positioning, and overall skills will become.

Here are some great places to play pickleball in Singapore:

1. Neighbourhood badminton courts

Many of our neighbourhood badminton courts can easily be converted for pickleball play. These courts are typically available for public use and do not require advanced bookings. With just the addition of a pickleball net, you can set up your court and enjoy a game without needing specialised facilities.

Pro Tip: For the best experience, play during weekday mornings or afternoons, when the courts are less crowded. If you’re planning to play on weekends, aim for around 8am to avoid the peak hours.

2. Community clubs and sports halls

Community clubs and sports halls throughout Singapore often include pickleball in their recreational sports programmes. These venues are well-equipped and welcome players of all skill levels, offering a great environment for both casual play and structured lessons.

To book a court, simply visit the OnePA website, where you can book a space for a small fee starting from $4.50 per hour. Keep in mind that these courts are highly sought after, and some bookings may be made via a ballot system. Be sure to check the website regularly, as new time slots are released weekly.

3. Join an interest group

Some popular pickleball organisations in Singapore include PickleGo, Top Pro Pickleball, and PlayPickle. These groups offer a welcoming environment for players of all levels, allowing you to learn, practice, and grow while making new friends who share your passion for the sport.

Benefits of playing pickleball

Playing pickleball in Singapore offers a range of benefits. It’s an excellent way to stay active, improve cardiovascular health, and enhance coordination. The sport’s low-impact nature makes it accessible to all ages (yes, even Ah Ma can join in!).

With its smaller court and slower pace, pickleball is ideal for those who want to stay active without putting too much strain on their body. It’s a perfect alternative to higher-impact sports like tennis or basketball, which can be tough on the joints and muscles.

Additionally, pickleball’s social and fun atmosphere makes it a great way to meet new people, foster connections, and build a sense of community while staying fit.

The beauty of pickleball lies in its simplicity. The rules are easy to understand, and the game is engaging without being overly complicated. Whether you’re enjoying a casual match with friends or diving into a competitive league, it’s always a fun time!

Plus, the easy access to courts and affordable equipment make it a convenient and enjoyable option for anyone looking to get some daily exercise while having a blast.
