Ask any Singaporean what they think the national pastime is, and the answer is likely to involve food. And there’s no better way to taste our diverse food culture than through the best snacks in Singapore! From all-time favourites to local spins on well-loved snacks, there’s no shortage of snack options when you’re in Singapore! Whether you’re looking to relive your childhood again with some of your favourite childhood snacks, or a tourist trying to dabao some of the Singapore food back home, we’ve rounded up some of the best snacks you must buy and stock up on in Singapore before you leave!
1. Ya Kun Kaya Toast

Nothing wakes me better in the morning than a slice of heavenly butter sandwiched between sweet, ooey-gooey kaya and perfectly toasted bread. When you pair that with runny eggs, it is the perfect blend of savoury and sweet, also known as the traditional Singaporean breakfast. This can be found at Ya Kun Kaya Toast, otherwise more casually and commonly referred to as Ya Kun here. If your friends or family from overseas would like a taste of one of the best snacks in Singapore, you can dabao a jar of kaya from their physical stores. While you’re there, be sure to help yourself to Ya Kun’s mouth-watering breakfast sets.

2. Bengawan Solo

When welcoming my sweet-toothed friends to Singapore, I’d always introduce them to the classic pandan chiffon cake. Light, fluffy, and moist, it is the perfect blend of fragrant and not-too-sweet. One of my favourite pandan chiffon cakes would be the one from Bengawan Solo. Their version stands out for its airy texture and strong pandan flavour – unlike others that can be overly dense or too sugary. Don’t forget to dabao some of their traditional kuehs either. My personal favourite would be Kueh Talam and Ondeh-Ondeh for that coconutty goodness!

I always look forward to wolfing down these deliciously honey-coated barbequed meat any time of the year. No doubt, your foreign friends and family can also count themselves blessed, especially if they’re big fans of a good American or Korean BBQ!

6. Mr. Bean

I usually can’t go without dessert. Even when meals get too much, I’d always have that “extra” stomach reserved just for my sweet treat – but of course, it’ll always be something lighter. Cue Mr. Bean’s beancurd, also known as dou hua, which never fails to bring me joy. It has a subtle sweetness and a smooth texture that’s oh-so-palatable. And while this may not be a travel-friendly gift, you could always gift your friends with the Instant Beancurd Mix so they can re-create their newfound favourite dessert from home!

For extra protein and texture, this umami-ness is usually added on top of bread, porridge, tofu and even rice.

8. White Rabbit Candy

Many adults still tout this as one of the best childhood snacks. I still remember the way my parents would prop this in a glass jar at a height to prevent me from completely devouring the entire pack of White Rabbit Candy. If you haven’t already tried this sweet treat, you’re missing out!
9. Old Chang Kee

Whenever hunger pangs hit after school, I would race to the nearest Old Chang Kee for their best snack – skewered fishballs and the deliciously crispy chicken wings. These snacks, while seemingly ordinary, really are simple pleasures. Even now, when I find myself craving a quick savoury snack, I would still grab my quick bite from Old Chang Kee.
